Driving with Headphones

Headphones are an item that many people use in their everyday life. They are a tech product that continues to evolve and keep becoming easier to use. Now, every company has released a wireless headphone option, which most people opt into. Many people may think that using their wireless headphones while driving increases their safety because it is allowing them to be more hands-free with technical distractions and more hands-on with driving. But, there are still many safety concerns that go along with drivers using headphones or a Bluetooth earpiece.

When you are driving, there are many sounds that the driver needs to hear in order to be aware of the road and any possible dangers. For example, if you have both of your headphones in while you are driving and there is an emergency vehicle that is trying to come through, you may not be able to hear the sirens. That can cause danger for not only you, but also the person(s) in the emergency vehicle who needs to get to the hospital as fast as possible. Other sounds that you may miss on the road is if other drivers are honking or trying to communicate. Having your headphones in could even cause you to miss a sound that your vehicle is making which could be alerting you that something is wrong.

Even though it is still not ideal, many drivers will help eliminate the safety concerns with wearing headphones or earpieces by only wearing one out of the two. This way, the driver will still be able to hear the emergency sounds or other drivers, but also is still able to listen to their headphones. The reason that this is still not ideal for driving is because no matter what they are listening to, whether it be music or a phone conversation, it is still taking the driver’s mind and eyes off of the road. It is inevitable that the driver will still be distracted while listening to something in their ears. So, if their mind is distracted, their safety is impaired.

Many states have laws that prohibit the use of headphones while driving completely. According to AAA, Kentucky does not have any laws that prohibit the use of headphones while driving. Although it is not against the law, you should still be sure that you are cautious when you are using your headphones or earpiece while driving because of safety concerns. There are many alternatives now that come with cars to help you avoid distracted driving. The biggest help with this is having Bluetooth connectivity within your car. If you are able to connect your device and play/listen to what you would like through your car’s speakers instead of your headphones, you will still be able to hear the important sounds. No matter what, be sure to be alert and cautious with the sounds like go along with driver to protect your safety, as well as the safety of other drivers.
